Androgyny Image

This English language postcard published by a French company during WW II shows a German policeman domineering what appears to be a German citizen groveling in a state of advanced famine. The caption on the top left of the card satirizes the German rallying cry "Deutschland uber alles (Germany over all)" by substituting the word Famine for Germany. This author is pointing to the ironic reversal of fortune in the latter years of the war when, instead of the Nazis dehumanizing millions of individuals of ethnic and national subcultures, the German citizenry itself became the victim of Hitler's obstinate refusal to surrendur. At that point, German citizens became synonymous more with deprivation, lack of autonomy and, as seen here, lack of gender, than with superiority as they had once proclaimed.
